Tesla’s Full Self-Driving — commonly called FSD — is an advanced driver-assistance system that handles steering, acceleration, braking, and navigation in a wide range of conditions. Despite its name, FSD currently requires an attentive human driver who is prepared to intervene at any time.
What FSD Actually Does
FSD manages the vehicle’s inputs on public roads including freeway driving, lane changes, urban street navigation, traffic light and stop sign detection, and turning at intersections. In Autopilot terms, it extends beyond highway use cases to city streets.
The Hardware and Software Approach
Tesla’s approach is camera-first. The vehicle uses eight cameras, ultrasonic sensors (on older hardware), and a neural network processing system to perceive its environment. Tesla refers to this as a vision-based approach, contrasting with competitors who use LiDAR.
The software is trained on billions of miles of real-world data collected from the Tesla fleet. Tesla continuously updates FSD over the air, improving performance as the model improves.
Current Limitations
FSD is not infallible. It can struggle in unusual weather, construction zones, ambiguous road markings, and complex merge situations. Tesla’s own guidance requires hands on the wheel and eyes on the road at all times — making the “Full Self-Driving” label a source of ongoing public debate.
The Path to Autonomy
Tesla’s stated goal is to evolve FSD into a genuinely driverless system — the foundation for the Cybercab. The technical gap between current FSD and reliable unsupervised operation is real, and honest coverage of autonomous vehicle progress means acknowledging it alongside the genuine achievements.
